What can a watch-only wallet do during a swap
A watch-only wallet can track the swap's progress and verify that the outgoing transaction was broadcast. It cannot initiate, sign, or approve any part of the swap itself.

Status: waiting for your deposit
You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.
The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. babybtc.xyz never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.
The role of a watch-only wallet during a swap is purely observational. It displays the public addresses and transaction history associated with a private key you do not hold in that interface. Because the swap requires no action from the crypto/hardware-wallet-vs-software-wallet-first-storage/">hardware wallet until the final verification step, the watch-only wallet gives you a window into what is happening without ever needing the cold device to be connected.
What a watch-only wallet can do
- Monitor the deposit address. You can check that the assets you intended to swap have arrived at the correct address. The watch-only wallet will show the incoming transaction as soon as it is detected on the blockchain.
- Track the swap's status. After the deposit is confirmed, the swap proceeds on the exchanger's side. The watch-only wallet will show the outgoing transaction from the deposit address when the exchanger sends the swapped tokens to your receive address. You can see confirmations accumulate.
- Verify the receive address. Before the swap begins, you can compare the receive address displayed in the swap interface against the one in your watch-only wallet. If they match, the destination is correct. This does not require the hardware device.
- Check that the swap completed. Once the swapped tokens arrive at your receive address, the watch-only wallet will show that balance. You can confirm the transaction ID and the amount received.
What a watch-only wallet cannot do
- Initiate the swap. The watch-only wallet lacks the private key. It cannot construct or broadcast the transaction that sends your assets to the deposit address. That step requires the hardware wallet to sign, which is why the device must be connected briefly for that single action.
- Sign any message. The swap may require a signed message to prove ownership of the receive address. A watch-only wallet cannot produce that signature.
- Cancel or modify the swap. If you need to change the destination or stop the swap, the watch-only wallet provides no mechanism. Only the party holding the private key has that authority.
- Reveal your hardware wallet's keys. The watch-only wallet contains only public information. It cannot be used to derive or expose the private keys stored on the device.
Why this matters for hardware wallet swaps
The entire point of using a hardware wallet is to keep the private keys offline. During a swap, the hardware wallet must sign exactly one transaction: the one that sends your original assets to the exchanger's deposit address. After that, the device can be disconnected and stored away.
The watch-only wallet then becomes your window into the process. You do not need to connect the hardware wallet again until you want to verify the receive address on its screen - a step covered in detail on the sibling page "How do I verify a swap receive address on my hardware wallet screen." That verification is optional but recommended, especially for large amounts.
If you are following the method described in the hub page "Swapping from hardware wallet without exposing keys," the watch-only wallet is how you watch the swap unfold without ever exposing your private key to a connected computer. It gives you transparency without risk.
A practical example
You connect your hardware wallet briefly to send Bitcoin to the swap deposit address. The hardware wallet signs, you broadcast the transaction, and you disconnect the device. Now you open your watch-only wallet, which shows the same Bitcoin address. You see the outgoing transaction appear. Over the next hour, you watch as the deposit receives confirmations. Later, you see a new transaction arriving at your receive address - this time in the swapped token. The watch-only wallet shows the balance increase. The swap is complete. Your hardware wallet never touched the internet again after that first signature.
Limitations to keep in mind
A watch-only wallet relies on a blockchain explorer or node. If that service is down or slow, the displayed information may lag behind reality. The swap itself is unaffected; only your ability to watch is delayed.
Also, a watch-only wallet cannot prove that the address it shows belongs to your hardware wallet. An attacker who feeds you a fake watch-only wallet could show you a different address. Always generate the watch-only wallet from the hardware device's public key, not from a third party.
For the full procedure, including how to set up the watch-only wallet and perform the single hardware signature, see the hub page "Swapping from hardware wallet without exposing keys." It walks through the entire flow step by step.
